Mechanical Department

The Mechanical Department is responsible for providing technical and vocational education and training in Mechanical engineering and Metal fabrication. The Department aims to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills, and competencies required to meet the needs of industry, support self-employment, and contribute to national development.

Sections Under Mechanical Department

The Department consists of two main sections:

Training Programmes

1. Trade Test Levels I, II and III in Mechanical Fitting

Trade tests assess occupational competence in a particular trade. The exact competencies and progression requirements depend on the applicable national trade-testing framework and approved assessment standards.

Trade Test Level I

Focuses on foundational trade skills and the ability to perform basic mechanical fitting tasks using appropriate tools, measuring instruments, and safe working procedures.
Typical tasks: Measuring, marking out, filing, drilling, cutting, and basic fitting and assembly.

Trade Test Level II

Develops intermediate occupational competence, including the ability to carry out a wider range of fitting operations with greater accuracy and independence.
Typical tasks: More complex fitting and assembly, machining operations, component inspection, and routine maintenance.

Trade Test Level III

Focuses on higher-level trade competence, including more complex fitting, assembly, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and working independently to the required technical standards.
Typical tasks: Complex mechanical assembly, fault identification, equipment maintenance, precision fitting, and interpretation of technical drawings.

Career opportunities: Depending on the level attained, practical experience, and employer requirements, trade-tested fitters may work in manufacturing plants, engineering workshops, mining operations, maintenance departments, and other industrial environments.

2. Mechanical Fitting - Craft Certificate

The Mechanical Fitting programme equips students with the basic technical knowledge and practical skills required to manufacture, assemble, install, maintain, and repair mechanical components and equipment.

Career opportunities: Mechanical fitter assistant, workshop technician, maintenance assistant, and entry-level mechanical fitting positions.

3. Advanced Certificate in Mechanical

The Advanced Certificate in Mechanical builds on foundational mechanical skills and develops more advanced knowledge and practical competencies in mechanical systems, machinery, maintenance, and workshop operations.

Career opportunities: Mechanical maintenance technician, mechanical fitter, workshop technician, and maintenance team leader, depending on experience and employer requirements.

4. Advanced Certificate in Metal Fabrication

The Advanced Certificate in Metal Fabrication equips students with advanced technical knowledge and practical skills in metalworking, fabrication, welding, and the production of metal structures and components. The programme prepares learners to undertake more complex fabrication tasks in engineering workshops, manufacturing industries, construction, and related sectors.

5. Diploma in Mechanical Technology

The Diploma in Mechanical Technology provides broader and more in-depth technical training in mechanical engineering principles, machinery, manufacturing processes, maintenance systems, and engineering problem-solving.
The diploma develops the ability to analyse technical problems, support engineering operations, improve production processes, and supervise technical activities. It should not automatically be presented as equivalent to a professional engineering degree.

Career opportunities: Mechanical engineering technologist, maintenance or production technician, workshop supervisor, technical officer, and related industrial positions, depending on the qualification framework and employer requirements.

Our Training Approach

The Department combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practical training in workshops and laboratories. Emphasis is placed on competency development, workshop safety, quality workmanship, problem-solving, teamwork, innovation, and adherence to industry standards.
